ROLES:
THE CURATOR
All genders + ages welcome to apply (19+ due to liquor licensed venue)
This commanding presence runs the Heirloom Heels exhibit with precision, power, and a perfectly pressed clipboard. As the exhibit’s curator and host, The Curator sets the rules, enforces the vibes, and watches over the diamond stiletto with pride… until everything goes spectacularly wrong.
When the heist happens, they don’t crumble – they combust. Think: luxury event manager turned stressed-out crime investigator with a flair for the dramatic. As the exhibit spirals into chaos, The Curator transforms into an interrogator, detective, and try-hard all rolled into one.
Traits: Authoritative, Glamorous, High-Strung, Intelligent, Passionate, Dryly Funny, Anxious
This is a live mic role with lots of audience interaction. The performer must move between formal host, expressive actor, and chaotic detective with ease. Strong voice, physicality, and presence required.
SCRIPT EXCERPT FOR THE CURATOR:
Excuse me!!! No, no, no, no! You cannot just crawl under the display like it’s your Auntie Marlene’s coffee table! Tray out. Head up. OUT! (shooing the server offstage) Oh perfect. Just perfect, perfect, perfect.
Chef Moustard!!?! Where are you.. (CHEF enters side stage, already bracing for the Curator)
There you are! Chef Moustard! Could you please come deal with your staff, they seem deeply confused with the concept of velvet ropes.. And we certainly don’t want this to turn into another incident like last years fondue fountain.. right?
Thank you! You may go. (CHEF exits, mildly offended.)
Oh - Doctor Plum! (PLUM enters casually confident and pleasant as Curator waves their note cards in the air)n Thank goodness, a voice of reason. Quick check on my notes here.. for the antique diamond stiletto’s origin, is there any confirmed provenance? Your note card just says “Unknown, possibly 1920s Europe” Should we add anything there? (Plum goes to say something but the curator cuts them off and they eye roll) Ugh.. Never mind, there’s no time. I’ll make do. Can you just… look these over? Thank you. You're a lifesaver. (PLUM nods and waves her off, exiting coolly)
Now… where is.. oh, right there! Miss Scarlett (smoothing their hair and taking a calming breath while walking over to SCARLETT who has entered and is looking at a display) How wonderful to see you tonight! Isn’t it beautiful to see your family donation make all of this possible! Really.. I mean just look at this piece. Hand-stitched satin, (starts to get very into the shoes as they talk, excitement rising in their voice) custom steel arch with a carved down heel, designed originally for stage performers to use as a weapon if ever needed… it’s possibly fatal if thrown. Isn’t that fascinating? (Scarlett side-eyes them and walks off mid-sentence.)
Right. Fascinating. (gritting teeth and adjusting their face and outfit, shaking off the energy)
Ah! Zelena Lush. I’m surprised to see you here, as you weren’t technically… listed on the guest list, but I’m sure that’s just a clerical error. Of course we’re thrilled you’re covering the event as a… um.. social media.. Ambassador?!
Just a gentle reminder: filming is only permitted in designated zones and we must make room for others.. And also maybe don’t be on your phone the whole night.. (Zelena goes to take a selfie with the Curator. Curator ducks and side-steps away.) Um.. oh look, champagne! Okay thank youuuuu, enjoy the exhibit! (CURATOR sneaks away pivots, straightens jacket, exhales as PEACOCK enters the stage and they walk first past one another, then turn back and do a wide circle with one another, then end up standing side by side as they look out over the audience)
Peacock. (nods to them, awaiting an acknowledgement but none comes) So nice to finally catch you standing still… The performances tonight have been… flawless, really. You’ve outdone yourself. (Peacock nods, deadpan.)
Good work, really. I saw you were here late last night… still rehearsing in the main room long past closing. What exactly were you doing once the dancers left… (Peacock spots a dancer and abruptly leaves.)
Charming. Just classic Paige. (pauses, resets, goes up to top stage and signals to lower the music turning on their audience specific voice. )
Distinguished Guests… The moment has arrived. May I invite you all to gather your attention for the reveal of the highlight of our exhibit tonight.
The rare. The radiant. The (some even say) potentially cursed.. Gem of the evening. Our precious Antique Diamond Stiletto. Let’s give it a little drumroll, shall we? Yes yes, with your hands, your feet, go on, you’re allowed to get a little rowdy tonight.. Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. (pulls the fabric off the case. Dancers gasp and burst into clapping. Curator gestures for audience to “ooo” and “ahhh.”) There she is. Isn’t she exquisite?
DETECTIVE ROSE: THE PLANTED PI
Woman, aged 25-50
A secret weapon hiding in plain sight. Detective Rose starts the night as an audience member, only to spring into action when the shoe goes missing. Think: Elle Woods with a magnifying glass and way too much enthusiasm.
This over-the-top amateur sleuth guides the audience (and herself) through the crime, always one glittery step ahead. She’s chaotic, comedic, and surprisingly brilliant, even when she doesn’t realize it. Underestimated and overlooked, she ends up being the key to the whole mystery, solving the case and taking the audience through the reveal of our whodunnit.
Traits: Humorous, Bubbly, Bold, Unfiltered, Determined, Playful, Heartfelt
This role is high-energy and features improvisation, ad-libbing, and direct audience interaction. Great comedic timing, warmth, and comfort with crowd work are essential. While they have lines, the role overall feels like a MC or Host role with the audience.
SCRIPT EXCERPT FOR DETECTIVE ROSE:
Oh that’s me!! Yes me… hang on.. One sec, I’ve got to get myself over there.. Excuse me.. Oh yes oh yes! I’ve got this. Don’t worry, folks. (arrives at the front of the stage) This is my moment. I’m your gal. I’m a detective!! (pause) Well… hobbyist detective. Well.. PI.. Hobbyist PI.. But I love CSI. And I grew up on Pink Panther. So basically? I’m highly qualified. (Points dramatically to an audience member nearby thats been pre-assigned the role)
Oh you sweet thing, you look so stressed. Let me help. I can feel the buzz of the pursuit in the air. Eeek! I’ve waited for this day my whole life. (Steps forward, suddenly taking control of the room like a host.) Alright everyone, let’s go over what we know! (Holds up fingers one by one, ticking off clues as if she already has them on hand. The music changes to spy sounding energy)
Whoever did this must have had access behind the scenes, the alarm never went off and the cameras have been clearly moved to face away.
There are no fingerprints.. which means gloves, babe. Always gloves. But were they elegant outfit enhancements? Or something more.. Professional..
There were feathers left in the hallway, leading away from the shoe case. Suspicious.. But feathers do fly at times like these! I can already see a few of our guests wearing them tonight..
Stiletto marks on the floor underneath the display. Very on brand, honestly. But this must mean our thief had to have stilettos on tonight..
And whoever pulled it off? Well they clearly had to hide it in plain sight. A bag, a coat, a puffy dress, someway to smuggle the shoe You get the picture. (Adjusts glasses and places post its on her clip board as she picks up the clue markers and hands the clipboards to Curator casually)
SELF-TAPE ASSIGNMENT
Please record yourself doing the following:
Introduce yourself, and tell us anything you’d like to share about your background
What is it that draws you to performing in a Luminesque show?
Performing the script excerpt (above), this can be ad-libbed or adjusted as desired
We want to see you bring the character to life in your own way, and the script will be developed to support this character's casting. Do not worry if you do not recite the script exactly.
OPTIONAL: You may also submit a resume, demo reel or cover letter if you wish. Please upload it to the same form as the self tape.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
HEEL HEIST - SHOW INFORMATION:
This Fall, play detective with us in HEEL HEIST - our provocative whodunnit about a missing diamond shoe. Amidst the grand opening of the “Heirloom Heels” exhibit at the Musee d’Lumay, guests are flabbergasted when the pièce de résistance - the Diamond Stiletto - suddenly vanishes. Follow our Curator as they investigate each suspect, and uncover the clues to reveal the culprit.
When we originally wrote Heel Heist, we imagined it as an immersive, interactive production that left the audience aghast when the twist drops like a mic. While we’re proud of the film we were able to create back in 2021 when video was the only option - we’re overjoyed by the chance to bring our original vision to life... with even more enhancements, refinements, and new surprises!
Our favourite thing about Heel Heist is the dynamic characters (loosely inspired by the game/movie, Clue) that our dancers will bring to life. From poised performers to sneaky gala guests; from the magnetic Mistress Scarlett to the passionate Professor, and more - there are so many roles to explore in this mystery. Dances will bring all the drama, and the soundtrack is a dynamic mix of iconic bops and artsy deep cuts.
At face value, the twist is an invitation to become curious about the origins of the art you admire. But beneath that, it’s a playful yet profound critique of how sexuality is stolen, packaged, and sold back to us - all while we live in a world where owning your own sexuality can leave you outcast like a criminal.
INTIMACY/COSTUMING
Role does not require staged intimacy or physical touch with other actors. There may be moments of physical connection with dancers but only at the discretion and comfort of the cast Lead Actors. Actors should be aware that the show and dance numbers do feature sexual themes. Costuming will be flexible to suit the level of comfort of the actor.
ACCESSIBILITY
Getting There
Both rehearsal and performance venues are located on Davie Street, just off Burrard, and are within walking distance from multiple bus routes.
Parking
Free parking is located on Burnaby street, otherwise we suggest the Sandman parking lot or meters out front.
Wheelchair Accessibility
It is with our deepest apologies that we acknowledge that Celebrities Nightclub and Glow Studios Vancouver are located in a heritage building and are not wheelchair accessible. We are continually advocating to both the building owners and the city of Vancouver to implement improvements to the venue so we can safely welcome guests in wheelchairs to attend the show, and are also actively seeking alternative performance spaces that are more accessible.
Gender-Neutral Washrooms
Both rehearsal and performance venues have designated gender-neutral washrooms available.
COVID-19 Safety Protocols
Glow Studios Inc. and Luminesque Dance abide by all government issued regulations and requirements surrounding COVID-19 safety. All changes leading up to and including the show dates will be made if required by BC Government official mandates. This includes but is not limited to live performance, indoor events, fitness classes and WorkSafe measures.
